Strawberries

Strawberries have been grown at Polter's Berry Farm since 1975.  We are constantly improving our growing practices and implementing the latest technology and varieties to produce the highest quality fruit you will ever eat.  We started with just one acre and a three week harvest season and and are now producing on 17 acres over a six week season.

Matted Row Strawberries

We have 10 acres of strawberries grown using a modified version of traditional matted row culture using eastern adapted varieties. We grow mainly Jewel in this system.  Jewel is an older variety bred in New York that we have been growing for nearly twenty years. We are constantly searching for a better berry but so far none has the flavor, yield, and postharvest qualities of Jewel.  We grow Jewel in a twin row system on a bed with a line of drip tape under each row.

Plasticulture Strawberries

We also grow 7 acres in the annual plasticulture system.  Plasticulture strawberries are grown using black plastic mulch and drip irrigation on raised beds. This system can produce large fruit up to three weeks earlier than the matted row system. We plant mainly Camarosa and Stella with a few other experimental varieties.  In this system we use plug plants which are not planted until the first week of September.  In late October we cover them up with a row cover. This extends the growing season into early December allowing the plants to initiate additional flower buds which will become next years fruit.

Retail Strawberries

Strawberry season typically begins in late May and can last until July 4. Most of our strawberries are sold pre-picked in wooden quarts like those shown below.  We also sell berries  Pick-your-own. For that we provide an 8-quart basket that is yours to keep so you do not need to bring any containers. Picking conditions can vary greatly so please feel free to call first.  Our retail hours are 7:30-7:30 Monday - Friday and 7:30-5:00 Saturday and Sunday.

Polter's Berry Farm does sell a large amount of our strawberries to wholesale customers.  We ship our strawberries in wooden quarts held in 8 quart berry masters.  Our range of delivery is around 90 miles which includes Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, and Toledo, although the majority of our wholesale berries are picked up at the farm. For more info go to our wholesale strawberry page.

Day Neutral Strawberries

We are now growing a little less than an acre of day neutral (summer bearing) strawberries.  Day neutrals are different than June bearing strawberries in that they are insensitive to daylength and will bloom and fruit nearly all summer long. We can harvest these from the end of July into October.  We are growing the Albion variety which is one of,  if not the best tasting strawberries grown today.  We are strictly wholesaling these so if your local farm market does not carry them please ask them to.

Raspberries

We grow early summer bearing red raspberries (Prelude variety). These come on near the end of June as strawberries are winding down.  We sell them pre-picked in pints, pick-your-own and wholesale.

Peas

We grow garden fresh peas. These usually begin about June 5 and continue for three weeks. You can purchase already shelled in pints or by the bushel.
